(Seguin) -- When it comes to National Night Out, it's never too early to begin planning.
In fact, the Seguin Police Department is asking residents to begin by marking their calendars for Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Carlos Contreras, the public information officer for the Seguin Police Department, says the department is excited to open registration for the 2017 neighborhood event.
"It's a perfect time for neighbors to know neighbors, get together, break out the barbecue pit, break out some music, break out any kind of ways to have every neighbor get to know each other and then also our police department personnel, fire department personnel, first responders that are in the city, to join the block parties that are going to be going on. Last year, we had up to 30 block parties. So we want to surpass that and go up for a higher number and hope that anyone and everyone that is interested in starting a block party sign up with us," said Contreras.
Contreras says now is also a good time to begin planning their party. He says big or small, the end result is what will help keep a neighborhood safe.
"People that have done block parties with us for years on end know that the sky is the limit as far as what kind of things to do for their quote on quote block parties. It can be just a little get together where they just get lawn chairs and stick them up in the front yard or they can go all out like some neighborhoods have gone out. They've gotten some food, like a food vendor come by in a trailer and then they had a band play -- like an acoustic guitar playing some good hits for all the neighbors to enjoy and then they had all these types of games for all the neighbors to get to know each other. So the sky is the limit. You can make it whatever kind of block party you want," said Contreras.
Contreras says National Night Out has proven to be one of the best ways for the public to take a bite out of crime. He says this is the public's first step in doing its part to protect and improve the community.
"It's just one of those things that we just want to get to know our community members, the citizens of Seguin because they're our partner. They're our partner in what's going on in the city. So we want to make sure that we hold on to that type of relationship with our community members and so having this National Night Out, we're excited. We're excited
about it. It's one of those big old events that we look forward to, where it's virtually all hands on deck and every officer is out on the field, out in the city, meeting and greeting everyone that is participating for National Night Out," said Contreras.
Those interested in signing up for a National Night Out party are asked to call Officer Contreras at the Seguin Police Department at 830-379-2123.
