(Seguin) — While new unwrapped toys, non-perishable foods and money are on top of the list of donations for this Friday’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive, they are not the only things that could be used by the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program and Seguin’s food pantry, the Christian Cupboard.

Volunteers with both organizations say there are often things that are needed but don’t necessarily fall under the new toy or food categories. Examples of some of those things include the donation of toiletries for the Christian Cupboard. Items usually requested by clients include shampoo, conditioner, lotions, diapers, adult diapers, laundry detergent, denture cleaners and toothpaste.

To help operate efficiently, the cupboard is also in need of recycled bags so that families are able to bring the bags back — helping the environment.

Clean egg cartons are also needed by the Christian Cupboard. Volunteers say eggs, that are purchased in bulk and that come in crates, are allowed to be distributed through these cartons. Home grown fruits and garden vegetables are also accepted at the local food pantry. Bags of flour, sugar and coffee are also encouraged. Volunteers says these products can be separated and distributed to several families. Processed meat by hunters is also accepted and appreciated by the pantry.

As for Blue Santa, volunteers say batteries are always a good donation and always seem to run out during wrap nights. Local residents are also encouraged to clean out their closets and donate new or last year’s wrapping paper, tissue paper, scissors, tape, name tags and bows.

The annual KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive will be held from 7  to 9 a.m. Friday. The event will again feature entertainment by the Seguin High School Matador Band from 7 to 8 a.m. The group will be followed the Navarro Band from 8 to 9 a.m. KWED is also excited to welcome for the first time, the Navarro Elementary School Choir during the same hour.

Those unable to make it this Friday are encouraged to drop off donations in advance. The items will be collected in the radio station lobby. The lobby is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and until 2 p.m. Friday

The radio station is located at 609 E. Court St.
