Seguin Career Day underway for soon to be graduates

(Seguin) – Today might just be the day that a high school senior from an area school walks away with a job.

Local high school seniors from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, and Marion ISD will gather today at Seguin High School’s Wellness Center to participate in the annual Seguin Career Day, an interactive and dynamic experience that facilitates a connection between high school students and local Seguin businesses.

Seguin Career Day is hosted by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation to ensure the long-term viability of employers within the Seguin community.

For years, Seguin employers have reported a sizeable gap between the talent that they need to keep growing their businesses and the talent they can find. Over the past couple of years, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation has collaborated with existing industry, local school districts, and other economic development partners to try and close the skills gap and create a stronger talent pipeline.

Organizers say Seguin Career Day helps to close the skills gap by bringing employers and students together. Today, nearly 20 employers from the Seguin community will showcase their company’s operations, career pathways and highlight the educational attainment and skill sets that are required for success in that company’s industry.

They say this event encourages students to explore their interests while providing them the opportunity to learn how they can apply those interests to future professional endeavors.

With a variety of employers on hand, this event will also act much like a job fair and will provide some students the ability to walk away from this event with job offers to begin work immediately following their graduation.

Josh Schneuker, executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation says this event will create a conduit between the businesses that need employees and the students looking for career opportunities in the Seguin area. He says this is also a great opportunity for graduates that are going off to college to see that Seguin has a lot to offer when they get their degrees.

Students who walk away from Seguin Career Day with job offers, will also have the opportunity to participate in a subsequent event called “Seguin Industry Signing Day” scheduled for the last week of April.

Seguin Industry Signing Day is an extension of a national event that applauds high school seniors who made the decision to pursue a career in skilled trades, a sector in high demand that continues to face an immense labor shortage. This program is similar to that of a student’s athletic scholarship signing day.
